Winter Skincare for Sensitive Skin

Winter Skincare for Sensitive Skin - Niyama Wellness

By Elaine Li, Founder Iremia Skincare

As we brave the dry, cold season, it can take a toll on our skin, causing it to  react differently than the warmer months. A change of season affects the way skin behaves and appears. This can often result in dryness, tightness, or even cracked skin.

Dry skin (or xerosis) is often associated with environmental causes such as the cold weather, central heating, taking long hot showers, or washing with harsh soaps.

According to the Mayo Clinic, dry skin (if not taken care of) can also lead to atopic dermatitis or eczema. With your skin barrier being compromised, severely dry skin can often lead to cracked skin which can let bacteria in.

Winter skincare is about repairing and protecting your skin. You don’t need to completely overhaul your skincare routine, but you do need to make some necessary changes, so here are six tips for ensuring a smoother transition into the colder seasons.

  1. Repair Damage

Certain skin types are more prone to increased sensitivity in the summer - the combination of heat, chlorine, and sun can cause damage to your skin that is important to repair come Fall, and continue to support in the winter months. Calm your skin with our Soothing Lotion, which includes calming ingredients like aloe, calendula and Manuka honey while promoting collagen synthesis thus reducing fine lines, smoothing pores and wrinkles. Also, it helps to choose products that are natural and avoid irritating ingredients like added fragrances.

  1. Use a Face Mist

Dry summer and winter air are common hydration culprits, especially when indoors. By using a face mist, you will be adding much needed hydration and other minerals onto your skin that can help combat the moisture-depleted air. Our All-Calm Face Mist is made with Black Oat Extract, rice water, and lotus water to help reduce trans-epidermal water loss while providing soothing properties. We have also added niacinamide and black oat extra to combat inflammation and provide long-lasting hydration. We also recommend using a humidifier as it will add some moisture back into the air, helping to prevent dry skin, as well as sinuses and throats.

  1. Moisturize your Skin

Switching to a richer moisturizer will give your skin the extra hydrating boost it needs in the cooler weather. Use our Protective Cream for any dry spots, as an extra moisturizer to protect your skin from the harsh cold, or even as an overnight mask with a facial oil. After your nighttime routine, put your hair up in a bun, warm a small amount of our Protective Cream between your fingers, and proceed to massage into your skin. Wake up in the morning with soft, dewy and hydrated skin!

  1. Add a Facial Oil

With the drier weather ahead, you may find that nourishing face oil is exactly what your skin needs. Add our Restorative Facial Oil to your skincare routine after your moisturizer to seal everything in. With ingredients like rosehip oil, argan, seabuckthorn, camellia and jojoba, this award-winning facial oil is sure to leave you glowing. It has even helped with acne scars, so having this versatile oil is around is essential to your skin's health.

  1. Stay Hydrated

What you eat and drink is reflected on your skin, regardless of the season. Drier climates demand more hydration during cold, fall months. That’s why it’s important to combat dry weather by drinking lots of water to stay hydrated as the seasons change. Water flushes out toxins from the body and keeps the skin moisturized and soft.

  1. Avoid Hot Showers

As much as it feels good to take a hot shower as the weather cools down, it can be really drying on your skin. Try to keep the water lukewarm in order to minimize the redness it can cause on your skin. If you do take those hot showers, make sure to pat the skin dry (don’t rub!), and finish off with a body oil to seal off the moisture.

Overall, when the seasons change so do your hormones and just like how your body craves certain things in certain seasons (i.e. comfort foods in winter) your skin does too and adjusting your skincare routine is important. Introducing these tips into your skincare routine will help ensure the transition into the cold season is as seamless as possible.
